The knot was chosen as a symbol for relationships, and the name came from the Ashley Book of Knots, where it was cited:
"In a knot of eight crossings, which is about the average knot size - there are 256 different over and under arrangements possible... - make only one change in this sequence and either an entirely new knot is made or no knot at all may result"
- so it is with relationships.
